The entire homeland consists of central Tibet, known as the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), nearly all of Qinghai, northern and western Sichuan, southwestern Gansu and the northwest corner of Yunnan. TAR is only 50% of the land mass of the Tibetan Plateau. Roughly 60% of Tibetans live outside of TAR. Special travel permits are needed for Lhasa and TAR. There re no permits for Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu and Yunnan.
