This popular itinerary begins and ends in Chengdu, making it very convenient for international travelers. This tour visits the heart of Kham or Eastern Tibet. Kham is the most geographically diverse region of the country and culturally very distinct from Amdo and TAR. You will never forget Kham!

After beginning with the world famous panda reserve just outside Chengdu, you will continue your adventure in landscapes of exceptional and rare beauty, interspersed with many opportunities for interacting with people and experiencing Tibet's cultural specialties such as riding yaks and horses. If you are interested, home-stays can be easily arranged in Kham.

Unlike other parts of the country, the people of Kham are tall—it is not uncommon for the men to be 6 ft or taller. The women of Kham still adhere to traditional attire, wearing extravagant jewelry of turquoise or coral.

Kham has many important and thriving monasteries and cultural institutions. Historically, it has held steadfastly to its sovereignty. Today, it is well known for its "lively" culture.

This itinerary begins with 9-10 days in Kham and extends into Golok for a few more days.

Golok is the highest region in Tibet and China—most of the region is above 4,000 m. It's beautiful and remote with verdant mountains, rivers and valleys. Starting from the Amnye Machen range, the important Yellow River flows throughout, creating pastoral flood plains. The winter is bitterly cold and frozen but the summer brings fields of grass and wild flowers.

The population of 140,000 is mostly nomadic. People are resilient and passionate about equestrian sports. They are also very religious. Although recent decades have brought change, much remains the same in the land and hearts of the people.

This itinerary will bring you the highlights of Kham and southern Amdo. It's a beautiful trip, never to be forgotten and can be combined with home-stays and camping.
